Description - Garcinia Cambogia/ Indica (Kocom) belongs to the family Clusiaceae is the most im¬portant species of Garcinia genus. It is a moderate sized tree, grows in the western ghats of South India and forest of Nilgiris. Leaves are dark glossy green, elliptic-obovate, opposite. Flowers are orange-reddish. Fruit which is commer¬cially important part, globular, brown, dark brown colored with deep ver¬tical grooves. Seeds enclosed within the succulent resinous fruit.
Main chemical constituents are tartaric acid, citric acid, phosphoric acid, two polyisoprenylated derivatives, camboginol and camdogin. Hydroxycitric acid inhibits the accumulation of fat as a result of consumption of carbohydrates and sugar; it activates the process of thermo-genesis. It neutralizes the function of the enzyme ATP citrate lyase, thus lowers the fat and cholesterol accumulation, it increases serotonin level (a neurotransmitter) and thus reduces the appetite, it inhibits the lipid and fatty acid synthesis and lowers the synthesis of triglycerides and LDL, it promotes the glycogen storage in liver and muscles.
The fruits are extracted, purified and converted into desired salt like, Ca, K, & Na, at various concentrations.
