Description - Mucuna pruriens or Kaunch is one of the popular medicinal plants of India. It is widespread over most of the subcontinent and is found in bushes, hedges and dry-deciduous forests throughout the plains of India.

Mucuna pruriens is a tropical legume known as velvet bean. Seeds contain L-DoPA (4-3, 4-dihydroxy phenylalanine), glutathione, lecithin, gallic acid, glycosides, nicotine, prurenine, prurenidine and dark brown viscous oil. It is a good source for minerals. According to Ayurveda, seeds are astringent, laxative, anthelmintic, aphrodisiac, alexipharmic and tonic. Mucuna pruriens seeds are of two different colors. The seeds of velvet bean are high in protein, lipids, dietary fiber, ash, carbohydrates and minerals. Also they are extremely rich in alkaloids, saponins, and sterols. Mucuna seeds contain high concentration of L-dopa - a direct precursor of the neurotransmitter dopamine. The hairs of the seed pots contain the phytochemical mucunain, the very constituent that irritates the skin when in contact. The serotonin is also has been found in the pod (as well as in the leaf and fruit).
